| How often do the Spanish Springs Trailblazers meet? The SSTB club meets once a month for monthly business meetings at 6:00, usually the third Wednesday of the month, location varies. Additional various activities are scheduled throughout the year (see the calendar page). What is "4-H" age? The age division is based on the 4-H member's age as of January 1 of the year competing. Cloverbud members are under 9 years of age, Junior members are 9 and 10 years of age, Intermediates are 11 to 13 years of age, and Seniors are 14 to 19 years of age. What are some of the costs? There is a $1.00 enrollment fee to join the club and a $2.00 insurance fee, both due annually. Most clinics are free, some with a minimal cost, and the horse shows vary from show to show. The range of costs per class is usually between $4-$8 per class, sometimes with a flat rate after a certain amount of classes are entered. The cost of your project, well,that's a whole different story! Where does the money go that is collected at the shows? Entry fees from the shows are used to pay for judges and safety crews. Whenever possible, the leaders try to obtain judges and safety crews who will donate their time and expertise. Fortunately, in the past, REMSA has been so kind as to donate one of their EMTs, also a 4H Dad, to be at our shows. All others are 4H volunteers who donate their time and help. The money that is left at the end of the year goes back into the 4H program in the way of awards for the members. When does the 4-H year officially start and end? The year starts October 1st and ends September 30th. Enrollment forms must be completed each year. What is 4-H Dress and when is it required? 4-H Dress is: Black or blue riding jeans, western belt, riding boots, white-long sleeved button up shirt, a green tie (or ribbon, rosette, etc.) and certified equine helmet. 4-H dress is required at all clinics, including the judging clinic, all 4-H sponsored horse shows (with the exception of open/playday shows) and the Nevada State Fair. What are the attendance requirements? There are no attendance requirements for our 4-H club, however, if you'd like to earn awards for attendance, the following is required: For 100% Attendance: A total of these 6 events must be attended:

**4-H members will be responsible for ensuring they sign in at each event (no exceptions). 4- H members signing in and then leaving events will be declared absent from that event. Why is keeping a Record Book so important? The SSTB's leaders have mandated the keeping of record books for all members for a number of reasons: Record keeping is a skill that is needed throughout life. No matter what career 4- H members enter, record keeping "know-how" is clearly needed and used throughout life. Record keeping also provides a tool for members to see how they have participated and grown in 4-H activities, how they improved their project work, and how they have helped improve their communities for others. Keeping records can help members establish goals, assume responsibility, and evaluate their progress. In addition, keeping a record book can lead to awards, trips and scholarships within the 4-H program. We also occasionally provide snack bars for various shows or clinics. After the purchase of the food, the rest is all profit! At the last clinic, we made over $250! What does the club spend money on? The club spends money on expenses for the Nevada State Fair, donations, & club parties, etc. What are the level tests? There are four levels within the 4-H program: cloverbud, Level I, Level II and Level III. Each level has a written and a skills (riding) test. All information for the written portion can be found in either the "Horses & Horsemanship" book or the "Horse Science" book. Patterns for the riding (skills) test are available to study and practice with for each level. Members must complete the Level I test, both written and skills, prior to entering in either the Qualifying Show or Nevada State Fair. Members will have several opportunities throughout the year to take the tests. Our club jackets are a red/white/blue, zip -up, wind breaker type jacket made of nylon with cotton lining on the inside. They are great for wearing over sweat shirts in the winter time and are light enough to wear in warmer weather. The front is embroidered with the member's first name and the back is embroidered with the Spanish Springs Trailblazer name and our horse logo. Cost is $42 for youth sizes and $45 for adult sizes. Parents are welcome to purchase a jacket for themselves if they'd like. What is State Expo and how do I qualify to attend? State Expo is a statewide cumulative event showcasing several 4H projects such as horses, rabbits, dogs, cavvy, public speaking, fashion revue, and state exhibits, to name a few. In order to attend the event, you must qualify at either the Qualifying Show or the Nevada State Fair by earning a blue ribbon. You may only enter into classes you earned a blue in. Past Expo's have been held in Douglas County and Las Vegas and are usually held in October. How can I get involved as a parent? There are many ways of getting involved in the 4-H program. Help is always welcome at the clinics, shows and all 4-H functions or activities. And, if you have any specific expertise our club could benefit from, please feel free to share it with us! |
